What strategies and tactics did people use to combat social, political, and economic injustice from the 1930s to 1960s?

That period saw a great deal of growth in the trade unions, and then in the laws those trade unions pushed through Congress. Minimum wage, closed union shops, the big political connections with labor. There were a lot of socialists and even communists involved, but in America, that was played down. The term "the working man" came to mean "the union man."

How effectively this actually improved social, political and economic conditions is a very debatable question.
