Is Obama’s campaign against "the rich" a good political strategy, or . . .?
a sign of desperation? Or both?
Seriously, there are a lot more poor people than rich people So will his call for higher taxes on the rich help his re-election chances?
And what other groups are in the majority that politicians could try to attract?
It depends on his definition of rich. Although they are not rich in most cases, since it is a gross figure currently $250,000 is rich. When he determines $75,000 is rich, attitudes will change.

While numerically the rich have fewer votes, they have a lot of money, and the simple truth of our electoral system is that money sways elections.
Which will win out? We’ll see. He needs to get better about his messaging if he wants it to work. "No more tax breaks for the rich that dump the burden on the good working people of America" is a far better message than "tax the rich".
Not that the Democrats are good at messaging.

It’s good economics. We returned to deficits with Bush’s tax cuts for the rich. Repealing those unnecessary cuts would be part of a strategy to reduce the deficit. And it won’t hurt the economy, as Republicans are pretending. Clinton raised taxes in 1993. It got rid of the deficit and was followed by the most rip-roarin’ economy ever. Let’s go back to the Clinton rates!
