Advise on a political campaign?

I am about to launch myself in a campaign to represent the students of my faculty in the university council, which deals with budget, internal laws of the university and internal investigations. I would like some advises on how to run my campaign, publicity strategy, and my campaign promises. Many students like unrealistic, unachievable promises; I will narrow my promises to realistic goals. In such a small election, it’s all about who you know. Do you think John McCain’s campaign suspension was a political strategy?
